The British Government’s political policy decision to abolish the statutory requirement to spend 0.7% of gross domestic product on overseas aid came in for a savage pasting from MPs and Peers in an online meeting with one of the country’s leading overseas aid agencies.
A meeting with members of parliament from both Houses, all parties and all religious denominations, heard Christine Allen, Director of Catholic overseas aid agency CAFOD, analyse the impact of the covid pandemic and the government’s overseas aid reductions. Other political speakers savaged the Conservative government’s attitude towards the world’s poorest who are in the front line when it comes to disease and poverty.
The meeting, organised by Whitehouse Consultancy Chairman, Chris Whitehouse, in his capacity as Secretary of the Catholic Legislators’ Network, was chaired by Labour MP, Catherine McKinnell MP (Labour Party, Newcastle upon Tyne North constituency), Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary CAFOD Group.
